El Escorial The outskirts of Madrid are characterised by breathtaking landscapes and interesting places to see.

The most famous attraction is el Escorial, a monastery built by Philipp II 50 kilometres out of Madrid. Its construction took about 21 years with the help of two famous architects, Juan Bautista de Toledo and Juan de Herrera, and it is impressive for its giant measures and austere style.

The main attractions are the Capilla Mayor, the Pantheon with the king’s tomb and the Throne hall and the museum in the Summer palace of Philipp II. You can get to Escorial by train, getting down at the nearby village of San Lorenzo del Escorial.

Alcala Another must see is Alcalá de Henares, 31 km far from Madrid. Its name means “Castillo sobre el río Henares” and in this city coexisted three different cultures for many years. It is famous for its University, founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1498, which converted the city in a university town. Other interesting things to see here are the 15th Century walls and the Church Iglesia Magistral . Besides here you can visit Casa de Cervantes, the well-known author of Don Quijote. Around the town you can also see many remains belonging to Roman and Gothic Ages. Unesco declared this town “unique” and World Human Heritage in 1998.

Another interesting town to visit is Chinchón, a medieval village located at 50 kilometres from Madrid. It is famous for its Plaza Mayor, where bullfights and theatre-performances take place. Other things worth visiting are the ruins of 15thC castle and a painting by Goya, exposed in a church (Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción). This town is also famous for its delicious gastronomy. One of the most famous dish is Anisette-brandy.Taste it..you won’t be deceived!

Toledo At 50 minutes by train you can visit Toledo, a medieval town situated above the Tagus River. It is characterised by cobbled and narrow streets and a mixture of cultures: Jewish, Christian and Muslim. Don’t miss to see the 13th c cathedral or the Alcazar, situated at the top of the town and dating back to Roman times. It was declared UNESCO heritage site in 1986.

Last but not least, you should visit Aranjuez, famous for its beautiful Palace, Palacio Real built between 16th and 17th C. Of special interest are the Porcelain room and the throne hall. In Casa del Labrador you will find a large collection of old clocks, porcelain objects, as well as nice gardens.
