Close to Museo del Prado, there is El Parque del Buen Retiro the most beautiful and popular park in Madrid. Here you can walk through its paths or do boating in the artificial pond located at the centre of the Park. Among the most interesting buildings to see here there is the Crystal Palace, made of glass and metal and built in 1887 as a winter garden for exotic plants. In El Paseo de la Argentina, known as Paseo de las Estatuas, you can see a series of statues dedicated to all Spanish kings and which were to embellish The Palacio Real de Madrid during the reign of Ferdinando VI. Besides there two nice fountains, “Fuente de la Alcachofa” and “Fuente del Ángel Caído”, inspired to Milton’ famous poem.
Finally in the Park there is also the Forest of the Departed (Bosque de los ausentes) a monument built to commemorate the 191 victims of the 2004 terrorist attack.
Then visit Atocha Station, which besides being the first and most central station of the town, hosts an indoor garden with 4000 square meters of tropical plants. There are more than 500 species of plant life and ponds with turtle and goldfish in.
Another nice garden to see, is the Royal Botanic garden, which was created in 18th C by Carlos III. It contains plants collected from América and Pacífico and also some from Europe.
El Parque del Oeste is another must see, with its outstanding collection of roses, La Rosaleda. Worth visiting in this park is an old Egyptian temple, Templo de Debod, quite an unusual building for Madrid
