Madrid is remarkable for its nightlife and nightclubs. People usually start their night in a tapas bar, where you can taste the delicious Spanish cuisine and then are used to changing many bars until the first lights of the dawn. On weekends Madrilenian people are used to dancing all night long, stopping only to go home, have breakfast with “chocolate con churros” take a shower and go to work. Nightlife and young cultural awakening flourished after the death of Franco, especially during the 80’s. The new movement was called La movida and initially gathered around Plaza del dos de Mayo (Malsaña area).
For example you can choose Bilbao quarter the where you should try the locals near Plaza de Santa Barbara or Alonso Martinez, where you can find the most famous disco in Madrid, Pacha. Argüelles and Moncloa are two university quarters while in Santa Ana and especially in the street called Calle Huertas, you will find a lot of bars closed to each other..forget to take your car here! Calle Arenal, at the
very heart of the city, hosts numerous discos among which “Joy” and “Palacio de Gaviria”. Interesting to see is also the multiethnic quarter of Lavapiés, where there are a lot of young people playing music until dawn.
Along Castellana you will find many bars crowded with people aged 25 called “pijos” or “yuppies” and there are also are many salsatecas, where to dance salsa. Whereas Malsaña quarter shows completely different characteristics: here bars are dirty and chaotic and their users are very young.
In winter, when it is cold and the wind is blowing, you may find shelter in one of the numerous cafés decorated in Belle Époque style. In some cafés, like the famous Café Gijón, it is likely that you find famous artists and writers meeting there, as it used to be in the past.
In summer you should have drink in one of the splendid terraces of Madrid. They are always crowded with people until late at night and in some places (like Madrid) you may find very extravagant characters.
Don’t forget that at any time of the year the town is full of concerts, Flamenco shows and theatre performances. Madrid is surely the capital of Nightlife and you will find something that suit your taste…whatever it may be!
