The monuments

Madrid is divided in different areas named after the historical moment in which the monuments were built.

Monuments of madrid For example in the area called “el Madrid de los Asturias”, you can find buildings in Renaissance and Baroque style. You can start from Puerta de Sol, the main entrance to Madrid in the past, considered symbol of the town. Then Visit Plaza Mayor which was built between 1617 and 1619. It is characterised by a Renaissance style and by the statue of the King in the centre of the square. In the past it was used as scenery of theatre performance and bullfights, but also as meeting centre of the Gremios, the association of Craftsmen. Worth seeing in this part of the town are The Cathedral of San Isidro, a baroque church and Lope de Vega’s house, in Calle Cervantes.

Monuments of madrid Among the building belonging to “Madrid de los Borbones”, The Royal Palace of Madrid deserves special mention. It is an impressive example of Italian Baroque style. Its construction was begun under Philip V with the help of the architects Juvara, Sabatini and Sacchetti. Inside the Palace we find numerous magnificent rooms, among which the most remarkable is the Throne Hall. Worth visiting are also the gardens, especially Jardines de Sabatini and Campo del Moro.

In Calle del Prado, you find the homonymous Museo del Prado, one of the most beautiful neoclassical buildings. It contains the most important collection of paintings worldwide, realised by Goya, Velázquez, El Greco, Zurbarán, Murillo, Tizian and some representatives of the Flemish school. This museum together with El Reina Sofia (where you can admire the famous work by Picasso, Guernica) and Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza( where there are works by Vang Gogh and Caravaggio) constitute the “Arts triangle of Prado” .

Monuments of madrid Located at centre of the city is the Cathedral of Almudena (la Catedral de la Almudena), begun in 16th C. The architect who designed and directed the construction in Gothic style was Francisco de Cubas. Finally an attraction for sports lover: the Stadium of Santiago de Bernabeu a huge building, which had been declared by UEFA Elite of five stars on its 60th year of existence.
