Gastronomy

Gastronomy Madrid is located in the central region of Spain which has a particular culinary tradition, largely meat-based. Within this tradition there are some dishes which are considered “typical” of Madrid, even if today Madrid offers more a Spanish kitchen rather than the original. The dishes that are called Madrileño in Spain are mainly hotpots, as the well known Cocido Madrileño with chick-peas. Then there are the Callaos a la Madrileña, a dish made by spicy beef tripe. Among regional specialities have to be named the delicious Asparagus from Aranjuez and the Sopa de Ajo (garlic soup) . Then don’t forget to try also the Oreja de Cerdo, pig ears fried with Garlic.
Despite its geographical location, Madrid is the ideal place for lovers of any kind of fish. Its fish market is the second in the world (behind Tokyo) and in many restaurants you will find a wide selection and extraordinary quality. A typical dish is Mariscada, (Seafood fest). To fit these meals you should taste the young and aromatic wines from the region, Vinos de Madrid and then to finish your meal try a cup of Asinado de Chinchón (asinette schnapps).
Traditional sweets are the Roscos de Santos, which are eaten especially during The Festival of San Isidro.
Madrid as most European capital cities has a wide range of restaurants serving International cuisine. You can eat tasty meals at reasonable prices in La Latina, Alonso Martinez, San Bernardo, Noviciado and Chueca metro stops. You can eat well and relatively inexpensively in many bars, where you can choose among different sized plates: a ración, (Spanish for “full dish”), a media ración or the smaller version, the famous tapa o pincho.
