“La Villa” is the name given to Madrid by its inhabitants, and in many quarters there are traditions dating back to the time when Madrid was not a town yet. For example, the celebrations of New Year are spectacular. People gather at Puerta del Sol and each one tries to eat twelve grapes eat at the struck of Midnight. This shall bring good luck for the new Year. After midnight the town becomes the scenery of a great party. On 5th January, there is the procession of the three Magi. On 15thMay they celebrate the patron saint of the town, San Isidro, during which many concerts and public performances are organised. There also the best bullfights of the season. During July and August, the town organises a series of cultural events, known as “Veranos de la villa” (Summer in the village). From 6th to 15th August there is the festival Verbena de la Paloma, during which visitors can appreciate the best popular traditions of Madrid with regional costumes and dances, the so-called Chotis . In November you can assist to the International Jazz Festival and the Fiestas de la Almudena. In December there is an exposition of Christmas cribs in Plaza Mayor.

As regards bullfighting, emblematic of Spain, Madrid hosts the largest bull ring (Las Ventas) of the country. Bullfighting’s season begins in March and ends in October, and bullfighting are held every day during San Isidro festivities, and on Sundays and public holidays, the rest of the season.
